BEHIND THE SCENES

Explorations

At the end of the day, my passion is creative visual communication, which can take on so many diverse forms!

Sometimes I feel like a jack-of-all-trades, master of none (or some), but as someone who wears many hats, I love being challenged by different media and technologies. When my professional hat is on, I’m using the typical Adobe suite, from Illustrator, After Effects, Photoshop, to Premiere. But when that hat is off, you’ll find me in Blender and using all sorts of traditional media. I’ve come to accept this as part of my creative journey, and I’m proud to be a multi-faceted, multimedia artist.

Here is a collection of some of my explorations.

PROJECT

Touchless kiosk demo with Leapmotion

KEY ROLES: UI/UX DESIGNER, ILLUSTRATOR

During the pandemic, I teamed up with developers Michael Kent and Brendan Polley to prototype out a touchless kiosk system (no grimy touchscreens here)! A large portion of the general public may not be familiar with the Leapmotion, so we really focused on working out what would be the most intuitive and comfortable interaction. Instead of gestures that might be confusing or difficult to do, we landed on a simple pointing system: where you point is what you get. I designed a fictional bubble tea store interface to provide some delicious context for the demo. The prototype was created for a Leapmotion contest.

3D Modelling & Animation

This is an ongoing project in Blender. I’m currently experimenting with hand-painted textures to create a more warm and cozy feel for 3D models.

Stylized leaves blowing in the wind
Ox carrying tangerines on its back
Cute smiling pilea plant

Traditional media

Despite my interest in new technology, nothing beats drawing on paper (except maybe when you want to undo something…)

Three snow-capped mushrooms painted in watercolour
Watercolour painting of girl in red with her shiba dog in snowy scene
Watercolour painting of Splatoon 2 inklings in Inkopolis
Watercolour painting of corgi and parakeet with a suitcase

Mixed media

And sometimes I get curious about how a watercolour painting would look in motion. Clipping out parts from a painting can be tedious, but combining digital motion and traditional paintings can yield some neat results!
